Valerie graduated from Tufts University in the early eighties, with a degree in Political Science and a self made major of Women’s Studies–this was before there were formalized Women’s Studies degrees. At that time, she volunteered with various abortion rights groups, at women’s shelters and working women’s networking groups. She then left that field of political work for a degree in Interior Design and the Arts. This was promptly replaced by the arrival of 5 children, as well as multiple moves within and outside of the US, consuming most if not all of Valerie’s time.
Valerie’s youngest child Grace became involved in Hardy Girls during her sophomore year of high school and it was through her involvement and witnessing her commitment that Valerie decided to get involved too. She is thrilled to be in the company of women and gender expansive folks of all ages, working for the growth and enrichment of the lives of young people across Maine.
